Last Updated: July 14, 2023
When you start researching a trip to Slovenia, you’ll likely read about the classic stops such as Lake Bled, the capital Ljubljana, and the Predjama Castle. But once you’ve stopped at the must-see tourist destinations, we recommend venturing off the beaten path for some unique adventures in Slovenia. We did a ton of research before our trip to Slovenia, and found these two hidden gems in Slovenia below. And these experiences ended up being the best activities in Slovenia that we did!
The 2 Best Hidden Gems in Slovenia
Now Slovenia is itself a beautiful hidden gem within Europe. So you’re already bound to have an incredible, unique experience just by visiting Slovenia. In fact, when we were in Slovenia, we were often the only Americans on our tours. It was mostly other Europeans, because apparently Slovenia is Europe’s best kept secret!
Slovenia is truly a hidden gem of a country. Once we began researching all that Slovenia had to offer, we knew we had to visit. And wow, were we glad we did! Slovenia ended up being our favorite country in Southeastern Europe.
If you check out some of these hidden gems, there’s a chance that Slovenia will become one of your top European destinations as well.

If you’re visiting Slovenia, you may have heard of the picturesque Julian Alps which stretch from Italy to Slovenia. Triglav National Park in Slovenia is a huge national park that covers large sections of the Julian Alps. And sure, you can explore the Julian Alps in Triglav National Park in many ways, but noble steeds can take you the distance.
What is the best way to visit Triglav National Park?
Surprisingly, horseback riding. We realized it was difficult to find clear ways to visit Triglav, Slovenia’s only national park. One of the only options to get up close and personal to the mountain views in Triglav National Park is to go for a really intense hike. (For example, if you’re really bold, you can try the 2-day mountaineering trip up Mount Triglav.)
Another option is to drive through Triglav National Park. Driving will give you some great views, but isn’t as up close and personal, and the winding roads in Triglav National Park can be scary to drive on. Since we wanted a close up experience of visiting Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps, we decided to go on a horseback riding trip.
Is horseback riding in Triglav National Park worth it?
We loved our trip horseback riding in Triglav National Park. Our guide was attentive and fun, and we got to cover way more ground then we would on foot. Plus, while riding horseback through the Julian Alps, you’ll get to use the phrase “hold your horses” and other puns quite literally. So why not?
Plus, you won’t have to look at a map or worry about getting lost. Your guide will walk alongside you, giving you a brief history about the surrounding area, as well as brush you up on your horse facts. For instance, did you know that horses can’t breathe through their mouths? Also, horses are super social animals, usually happy to see you. Just like me, you won’t be able to contain your smile.
When selecting your horseback riding tour, keep in mind your experience level. We did the multi-hour option. Although we had a fabulous time, we were definitely sore the next day! You can schedule either a 1-hour or a 4-hour trail ride. For clothing, we wore comfy pants and closed-toe shoes.
The horses looked well groomed, and honestly quite content, Take a look at this smiley guy here.
We love researching epic travel experiences, and horseback riding in Triglav National Park was among our favorites.
Sure, you may have tried white water rafting before, but white water rafting in the Soča River a whole new level. So if you have need for speed, white water rating in Slovenia is the experience for you!
The Soča River is part of the Julian Alps, and you may recognize it from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The emerald waters of this 85-mile-long river may very well make you feel like you’re in a fantasy novel!
If you’re staying near Lake Bled (which we highly recommend!), it’s an hour-and-a-half drive to get to the starting point of the white water rafting trip. As a bonus, you’ll get some stunning views of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park on the drive.
Once you get started on the river, it’s not long before laughter fills your raft, as the tour guide cracks jokes and gets everyone dancing.
And you know you’ve left the U.S.A. when your guide makes a stop to the flip the raft and create a makeshift trampoline, for any brave soul to jump/flip/tumble into the water. But you’re wearing helmets, so it’s safe, right?
Now friends always ask, is the Soča River water warm? Absolutely not. But your heart will be. 🙃 Furthermore, the full body wetsuits, along with your adrenaline, do a good job at keeping the icy chill away.
The best part of white water rafting in Slovenia is the people you bond with along the way. Think about it—you’re fully dependent on the person in front of you to keep rowing and shift their weight according to the guide’s instructions.
It’s a team bonding experience, and you’ll end the day with lifelong acquaintances! We ended up befriending two French women, who joined us after the trip for burgers and beer across the street.
Overall, we had a blast on our white water rafting trip in Slovenia. We literally could not stop smiling all day. If you like venturing beyond the tourist stops (and you don’t mind an adrenaline rush), we highly recommend this hidden gem experience in Slovenia.
Where to stay in Slovenia
While you’re planning your trip to Slovenia, you’ll likely be wondering where is the most central location to get to all Slovenia’s top tourist spots and the hidden gems.
For outstanding views, great food, and ambiance that’s both lively & peaceful, we recommend staying as close as possible to Lake Bled.
We stayed at a 4 Star hotel called Hotel Park. With spectacular views of the Julian Alps, heated pools, and all you can eat breakfast, it’s a stay we still talk about!
You may also consider lodging in the capital Ljubljana, which is closer to the popular Predjama Castle and Postojna Caves. But we felt the majority of the unique experiences were more accessible from Bled. But we did take a day trip into Ljubljana and were happy with our decision.
