Which tailor should you try in Hoi An?

The Blue Eye Tailor is a great tailor to try in Old Town Hoi An. In fact, the Blue Eye Tailor most recently won Tripadvisor’s travelers’ choice award in 2023, and for good reason. We got several outfits tailor-made at Blue Eye Tailor, and had a great experience there. We experienced attentive customer service, strong attention to detail, and a quick turnaround on our clothes. You can check out their Instagram to see some of Blue Eye Tailor’s recent outfits.

Two other highly recommended tailors in Hoi An are Yaly Couture and Tuong Tailor – both in Old Town.

At any of these tailors, you can get high quality, custom made clothes while you’re visiting Hoi An.

What types of clothes can you get tailor made in Hoi An?

Pretty much any type of clothing you can think of! At each tailor, they have multiple catalogs you can select clothing from. The options are endless – dresses, pants, suits, blouses, trench coats, and more.

Personally, we got a dress, jumpsuit, romper, and vest made. We saw others in the shop getting tailor-made pants, suit jackets, and trench coats.

The catalog can be somewhat overwhelming when you first begin. But take your time to look through the many options for tailor-made clothing in Hoi An, since you might find a unique idea that you hadn’t thought of before. The tailors were all very patient with us as we picked out our patterns.

What should you expect when visiting a tailor in Hoi An, Vietnam?

As soon as you walk in, you’ll get assigned to a tailor who will hand you a cold water bottle and explain the whole process to you. The tailor will bring you to a couch and show you the catalogs, where you can explore different clothing designs.

The tailors are very welcoming of any ideas you may find on Instagram or elsewhere online. They explain that they can mimic basically any dress idea you have, so feel free to bring your own photo as well if you have something in mind outside of the catalogs.

Once you choose your picture or design, you choose the fabric. Depending on the clothing, your fabric options will likely include linen or silk (the two most expensive), cotton  (the least expensive), or a silk blend (somewhere in the middle).

Then, once you’ve selected your design and fabric, the tailor takes your measurements and you pay in full.

Next, you’ll come back around 24 hours later to try on your tailor made clothes and give them a chance to make note of any necessary alterations. After that, you’ll come back potentially later that day to pick up your finished clothes.

How long does it take to get clothes tailor-made in Hoi An?

You can get tailor-made clothes in Hoi An in as fast as 32 hours. For example, we first showed up around 11:00 am on a Saturday, came back for our measurements on Sunday at 2:00 pm, and picked up our finished clothes that same Sunday around 6:00 pm.

For a more complicated piece of clothing, like a three-piece suit, expect it to take a little longer, up to three days.

How much time do you need at the tailor in Hoi An?

For your initial appointment, plan to spend about an hour at the tailor to pick out your design and your fabric and to get measured. And if you happen to come at a busy time, you may have to wait a few minutes for a tailor to come available. (Though we did not have to wait on a Saturday at Blue Eye Tailor – there were plenty of tailors around to assist us.)

If you are short on time, the best way you can save time on your first visit to a tailor in Hoi An is to come with a clear photo of what you want made. Part of what took us the longest was browsing the catalogs and brainstorming with our tailor.

For the second visit to the tailor (the fitting) expect it to take around 30 minutes or less. The fitting with our tailor in Hoi An was very quick, even with multiple pieces of clothing. You try on each piece of clothing, and the tailor will check any places that it doesn’t fit exactly perfectly. You also have a say in how you would like things to be altered – shorter, tighter, looser– it’s your call.

How much do tailored clothes in Hoi An cost?

It depends on the fabric and the complexity of your design. Expect a range between $50-100 USD. For reference, we had a cotton dress made for around $45, a silk blend jumpsuit for around $70, and a linen romper for around $60.

You should note that at the tailors in Hoi An, the prices vary depending on the material you choose. Cotton is obviously much cheaper than linen and silk
